Ask the Book Doctor – Dialogue

Q: When I write dialogue, must I make all my characters

speak in contractions? My critique circle members say all

dialogue should use contractions. Aren’t we supposed to

give each character a unique voice? If so, can’t one of my

characters be so prim and proper that she doesn’t speak in

contractions?

A: The members of your critique group have the right idea—

natural dialogue does usually rely on contractions, but

creative writing gives a writer a great deal of leeway. You

know your characters best, and if one doesn’t use

contractions, so be it. Don’t let anyone–not even members

of your critique circle–cram a singular opinion down your

throat. Listen to the suggestions of others, thank them,

and then do whatever you want. If, however, an acquisitions

editor asks you to change something to make your piece more

marketable, that’s the time to listen and follow.

Submitting the Ebook Edition of your Self-Published Book

Last week I talked about using an ebook edition of your self-published book to promote your hard copy book.

I mentioned Amazon’s Kindle Store as one place where you can submit your ebook edition. If you haven’t checked that out yet, here is where you can go to set up your account and submit your ebook file: dtp.amazon.com

Have you been looking into other places where you can submit your ebook edition? There are a variety of ebook retailers on the internet. You can contact them each individually and submit your ebook file. Each ebook retailer will offer different royalty splits.

You can do a search on Google to find more ebook sites. Here’s another one to get you started: www.fictionwise.com

Self-Published Book Review of the Week: Frankie, the Walk ‘N Roll Dog

Frankie, the Walk ‘N Roll Dog
by Barbara Techel

What a delightful story! Barbara Techel has written a children’s book about her very special dachshund, Frankie, from Frankie’s point of view. This energetic little tweenie weinie (an overly large miniature dachshund ) tells her story, beginning at the time she came into Barbara’s life. She describes her daily life, her friends, her training issues and activities in a way that will make adults smile, especially dog lovers, and children giggle. Believe me, anyone who owns a dachshund, as I do, will appreciate the personality quirks of these unique and lovable mini dogs. Sadly, Frankie has an accident, one that leaves her unable to walk. This is the fear of every dachshund owner, because the long spine of dachshunds leave them prone to serious injury. But, Frankie works hard with help from her mom, her auntie, the veterinarians and physiotherapists, to heal and regain her ability to walk. Though this does not happen as planned, her mom, Barbara finds a way to help and Frankie digs right in with fierce determination, a well known trait of dachshunds.

Author, Barbara Techel, who has written a popular monthly column known as “For the Love of Animals”, has taken inspiration from her much loved pets and believes that her dogs have taught her the “valuable lesson” of finding “the blessing in every situation.” Techel states that she is a much better person because of her dogs. Her first children’s book, Frankie, the Walk ‘n Roll Dog, definitely bears the love and determinations she finds in her dogs, and the beautiful illustrations allow us to see Frankie, as we travel with her through her story.

Barbara Techel has given us a truly inspirational story that has an important message for children and adults alike. Life does not always go as we plan. When adversity strikes, we can overcome it if we use the strength within ourselves and the help of others. Frankie’s story will also help children and adults alike, see the need to have compassion for those with special needs.

Vanity Verses Self-Publishing

The self-publishing author community is becoming increasingly educated in options available, naturally comes in part as the by-product of approaching sound resources and asking good questions.

One question I do see stumbling around from time to time is some form of this, “Isn’t self-publishing the same as Vanity publishing.”

The answer: not really at all…

Vanity Presses often very dubiously attempt to present themselves as small presses, similar to ‘traditional’ publishers. They do this by claiming to be selective in terms of content. But those rejection rates are very low – generally reserved only for those manuscripts containing things like libel or pornography. But vanity presses do not otherwise screen for quality. They publish anyone who can pay, but don’t disclose that until well into the publishing process. Often, those fees are hidden in obscure production services unrelated to design, materials, or binding. That is where these operations ultimately make their money – charging authors book printing costs only to sell right back to authors.

The good news is that quality self-publishers are available with open, upfront, book production, distribution, and marketing options. And once books are professionally published copies are available where readers actually buy books. Unlimited printed copies are availabe for retailers and wholesalers on-demand, without additional out-of-pocket printing costs.

Keep writing.

Using an Ebook Edition to Promote Your Self Published Book

An ebook edition of your self-published book can help with the promotion of your hard copy book.

Simply put, distribution of an ebook is quicker and more affordable. With your electronic ebook file, you can literally sell the same “thing” over and over again. By giving people a choice between your ebook and your paperback, you offer them two different price points.

If you don’t have an ebook edition, you should consider getting one. If you have an ebook edition of your book, perhaps you are already using it to promote your hard copy version on places like Amazon’s Kindle Store.

Good luck and have fun!

Back to Writing on the Road to Self-Publishing

Ezines – they are a fast and free opportunity to self publish. Moreover, publishing in ezines can help you get motivated to write your book, and even promote your book after publication.

We’ve discussed the idea of publishing excerpts of your book as individual articles or stories. You can simply locate a website and query that site’s webmaster about publishing your article. Make sure you include your biographical byline, which mentions your book as well.

This is more of the same, but concentrating on ezine publication.

There really are countless ezines in existence now, each with a specific niche or category. And all of them are voraciously hungry for content.

Rather than seeking them out individually, you can place your articles into databases that ezine editors frequent for content. They use your article free of charge, and in exchange, include your biographical byline, which, again, includes information about you and your book.

Here are some to check out:

www.ebooksnbytes.com

www.connectionteam.com

www.netterweb.com

www.ideamarketers.com

www.goarticles.com

www.knowledge-finder.com

Don’t send an article you’ve already published last week. Instead, write another chapter of your book first (since finishing your book the main goal, after all.)

Have fun. Keep writing.

Self-Published Book Review of the Week: The Daughter-in-Law Rules

The Daughter-in-Law Rules
by Sally Shields

The DIL and MIL relationship whether perceived, imagined or real is the holocaust that has besieged relationships even from pre-historic times especially in Africa where the Extended Family System is very much part of our ‘vocabulary’. Though the language of this book is universal, I would love to view it from the eyes of an African woman.

The African tradition believes very much in the Extended Family system such that it is even recognized by our law, thus making it a MUST to be married literally to every member of our husband’s family.

In Africa and indeed the whole world, mothers tend to wield a lot of influence on their sons and that makes it a bit difficult for the woman since you would have to manage your MIL or else stand the risk of being ‘thrown out’ of your matrimonial home.

For a society that encourages polygamy, women are faced with a lot of challenges ranging from childlessness and/or the issue of not having a male child which automatically threatens your position as a wife.

However, I have good news for the very many women out there going through the DIL – MIL challenges that finally, this problem has been diagnosed and a therapy found for it. And that’s the book you’re holding right in your hands – the DIL RULES; 101 surefire ways of managing and (making friends) with your MIL.

This simple yet thought provoking book will make you laugh and give you a new perspective. It shines a light on little known facts on DIL – MIL relationships. This is one book that shows you how to get your MIL to be your greatest fan.

Sally walks you through her thinking as you skip through the pages, infact I can’t think of any ‘how – to’ book on relationship that has been so vividly rendered.

The traditional myths and legends about the DIL – MIL issues appears to have been broken!

It’s a kind of a spiritual uplifter unlike any I have ever read! It lightens your heart and gives you hope. This is to me by far, the most positive book ever written and you’ll feel like you’re doing yourself a favour every time you read it.

The DIL Rules is a page turner of positive energy from start to finish. Even when it brought tears to my eyes, those tears were followed by a smile.

This step by step manual of how to make friends with your MIL is truly a classic. Within these pages, you’ll discover your communication ‘style’ so you can more easily recognize the words, thoughts and feelings of your MIL and would also help you engage in clear and understandable conversations with your MIL. It’s indeed uplifting and very well explained.

I love it so much and for everyone who wants to explore the marital world safely, I would recommend to read it. Though a complete work from the Author’s experience, I still feel as if this is a MUST read for everyone. I truly believe in the Author’s experiences which led her in her journey to write this Literary Masterpiece. No one (in my opinion) can write such a beautiful book without a divine hand of guidance.

I applaud Sally Shields for giving readers such hope in the form of this Fun-read. With the world of ‘darkness’ and ‘uncertainty’ that surrounds us (women) in our matrimonial homes as a result of unpleasant relationship with our MILs, more books such as this, are desperately needed.

It will make for an incredible gift to someone you truly care about.

The DIL Rules entertains, heals and changes lives. It is something ‘to do’ for those who are hurting, grieving or confused about their lives as a result of their relationship with their MIL.

In fact, when you wish you could do more ….. The DIL Rules is what ‘you can do’. As a gift, it’s a treasure.

Traditional Publishing: Hard Facts

We are in ongoing exploration of the advantages leading self-publishing options offered for publishing authors. Collectively, what are the advantages of self-publishing in general over the long established alternative? Here are some hard facts on Traditional publishing.

7 – Traditional publishers lose money on over 85% of the books they publish, so they only accept 2% of those that are submitted.

6 – They typically accept manuscripts only from established authors who have demonstrated a proven track record.

5 – Authors lose all control of their content during the editing process.

4 – Authors must still invest an enormous amount of time, energy, and money promoting a traditionally-published book.

3- Authors typically receive 5-10% royalty on the wholesale price of the book, and from that have to give 15-25% to their agent. Do the math.

2 – The majority of books published by old-fashioned publishers go out of print within 3 years. Many books that are stocked on book shelves remain stocked for as little as five weeks before being returned, unsold, to the publisher.

1- Old-fashioned publishers acquire all rights to your book and keep them, even when the book goes out of print or the publisher goes out of business!

Media Leads for the Self Published Author

Have you ever read a newspaper article and seen a quote from the author of “such-and-such” and wondered how that could happen for you? Did the writer of that article just happen to know that author and call him up on the phone?

Sometimes, yes, but usually no. More likely, that author responded to a “quote request” that was sent out by either that article author or the newspaper. Thousands of articles are written every day on thousands of subjects, which gives you thousands of opportunities to get quoted — if only you knew how to hear about the opportunities.

There is a website that sends quote requests to you. Check it out. You may find it valuable, depending upon the type of self-published book you have written (non-fiction is more applicable to these types of services than fiction). The website address is: www.GetMediaLeads.com

Self-Publishing Resources

Self-publishing continues to gain footing in the book industry, bringing authors to the captain’s chair in terms of creative control, book pricing, and marketing. As this wave continues to build in speed and size, publishing options will inevitably follow.

Finding quality, researched information on self publishing options is important for authors looking for an advantage on the back-end, when sales help get good work into the marketplace. Stacie Vander Pol’s recently published book, Top Self Publishing Firms Revealed, is a new and sound resource in that arena.

The book is the product of Vander Pol’s own search for information about how several leading self-publishers fare in terms of book sales performance – actually helping authors get books in off press and into reader’s hands. Information about upfront fees, book pricing, and distribution is profiled as well.

Vander Pol notes in one interview that the her favorite part of the book is the enormous listing of current top-selling titles published by the organizations profiled. Keep an eye out for this one. It includes some solid, independent advice based on quality research.
